The job of teaching is one of the most complex and important professions. The psycho-pedagogical training meant to professionalize the didactic activity refers to both the formation and the development of general competences (of the design, management and evaluation of the didactic process), and psycho- educational, psycho-social, and socio-educational competences. The law of education envisages a training system for the didactic profession which includes the initial training of the teaching staff and the later improvement of this training, the continuing professional development respectively.

The initial training is achieved during the university studies, the performance training being done after graduation, through sessions of training which take place in higher education institutions. The co-ordination of the whole activity of psycho-pedagogical training is supervised by the Department for Teacher Education.

The DTE has a structural and functional individuality by the following elements:
– specific mission and objectives;
– students attending the didactic module and the others study programs organized by the DTE (post-
   university programs, professional and post-graduate conversion);
– internal scientific and administrative structures established according to its optimum functioning;
– distinctive secretary and activity evidence services.

The initial formation is accomplished during the BA stage, and there are also post-graduate stages of qualification. The coordination of the entire didactic formation activity is managed by the DTE.

Mission and objectives
The mission of the DTE has three main components:
– initial formation of the students' didactic profession and of the post-graduates, in order to provide
   competences and official degree attestation necessary to work in education;
– the continuous formation of teachers by periodic formation programs as well as by postgraduate stages
   of preparation;
– scientific research, on a theoretic and applicative level, in the field of education sciences, in compliance
   with the qualification requirements and development perspectives of education in Romania and Europe.

The content of training
The content of training is the same for all and is addressed to the students who choose the teaching profession. In accordance with the laws of the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth, and Sports, beginning with the academic year 2005-2006, the Departments for Teacher Education from universities organize the study program for obtaining the graduation certificate, following a two-level educational plan, as follows:

Level I (30 credits) which includes courses and seminars for the disciplines: Psychology of Education; Pedagogy I (The Fundamentals of Pedagogy + The Theory and Methodology of the Curriculum), Pedagogy II (The Theory and Methodology of Instruction + The Theory and Methodology of Evaluation), Didactic of the Specialization, an optional discipline, Practical Training and Final Evaluation - didactic portfolio.

Level I is done during the university years I-III/IV. The graduation of Level I is finalized with a graduation attestation which has an annex with the schools results, given by the Department for Teacher Education and certified by the Rector of the higher education institution.

The graduation attestation represents partial recognition of the teaching profession and enables the bearer to work as a teacher temporarily, until getting the first teaching certificate, according to the present laws.

Level II (30 credits) includes the following disciplines: The Didactic of the Curriculum Area, Class Management, Counseling and Guiding, Computer-Based Instruction, two optional disciplines and final evaluation - project. For those who have not taught between the graduation of Level I and the enrolment in Level II there is a stage of practical training of 42 hours.

Level II is done after getting the Bachelor's Degree and previous to the exam for the first teaching certificate. Level II can be attended both by the Master students and those who, after graduation, decide not to continue their studies.

The graduation of Level II is finalized with a graduation certificate. This assimilates and replaces the graduation attestation (partial certification) obtained previously. The enrolment for the first teaching certificate is conditioned by getting the graduation certificate from the Department for Teacher Education. Those who attended Levels I and II during their university and post-graduate studies can enroll afterwards at the Department for Teacher Education, at post-graduate courses to get the graduation certificate.

The experience of the last years has emphasized the fact that the students of our university, irrespective of their specializations, are very interested in getting this qualification, which offers them more possibilities to integrate themselves in the social life.
